Jonathan Osterman, also known as Dr. Manhattan, attended the prestigious Princeton University for a period of ten years (1948-1958). Following his final examination, he graduated with a Ph.D. in atomic physics.

The next year, he moved to a famous research base located in Gila Flats, where all manner of complex experiments were being carried out on the ‘intrinsic fields’ of physical objects.

It was a well-known fact that if these physical objects were to be tampered with, it could result in their instant disintegration, causing great damage to the surroundings.

It was at the base that he met Janey Slater, a fellow researcher, whom he greatly admired. The pair soon struck up a close friendship which later turned into an intimate relationship.

In July 1959, during a vacation in New Jersey, the couple decide to spend a few hours at an amusement park. Janey accidentally drops her watch on the grass, which gets damaged, when accidentally stepped on by a burly, heavyset man.

Upon examining it though, Jon tells her that it can be easily repaired and volunteers to do the job for her.

The Watchmen comic book series (hailed as one of the most popular graphic novels ever published) begins with the events that take place after a horrible murder in 1985. Edward Blake is found lying face down in a pool of blood, just in front of his apartment building.

According to police reports, all clues pointed to a cold-blooded murder; he was mercilessly beaten to death by his killer, who then tossed his body out of the window of his apartment.

A masked superhero by the name of Rorschach, privately launches his own investigation into the crime. He sneaks into Blake’s apartment and begins to hunt for clues that the police may have missed.

He suddenly stumbles upon a hidden closet containing all sort of tools and weapons, including a protective leather costume.
