Star Trek: The Next Generation (also known as TNG), is a popular space fiction tv series created by the ingenious Gene Roddenberry, as part of the hugely successful Star Trek franchise. Set about 70 years (around the 24th century) after the original series, TNG features a new crew and a new starship called the ‘Enterprise.’

The program made its debut with a 2-hour pilot ‘Encounter at Farpoint,’ during the week of September 28th, 1987 and was watched by over 27 million viewers. With a massive 178 episodes spread over 7 seasons, Star Trek: The Next Generation enjoyed a much longer run than any other Star Trek series.

It finally ended its run with the epic finale ‘All Good Things…” in the week of May 23rd, 1994.

The series was aired in first-run syndication, with times and dates varying among different individual tv stations. The show managed to attract a strong following, and just like its predecessor, remains enormously popular in syndicated reruns.

TNG was the first of many series (the other being Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: Enterprise and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) that consistently kept new Star Trek episodes being shown until 2005.
