Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is a massively popular adventure movie that’s based on the famous Pirates of the Caribbean ride at the Disney theme parks. It was released in 2003 and stars Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom.

The plot follows Will Turner (Bloom), a blacksmith and pirate Captain Jack Sparrow (Depp) as they concoct a daring plan to rescue the lovely Elizabeth Swann (Knightley) whose being held hostage by the cursed crew of the Black Pearl. The Black Pearl is a ghostly pirate ship captained by the formidable Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush).

The movie was directed by Gore Verbinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer (who has produced a number of action films that have gone on to become box office hits), and became the first ever release by Walt Disney Pictures to earn a PG-13 rating.

The world premier of Pirates of the Caribbean was held on the 28th of June, 2003 at at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California.

POC was a huge success – it was a hit with audiences all over the globe, attracted plenty of positive reviews (most critics loved it), and grossed well over $654 million worldwide.

It also became the first in a trio of films, the other ones being ‘Dead Man’s Chest’ and ‘At World’s End.’ POC was in the running for 5 Oscar awards, including a Best Actor nomination for Johnny Depp.

The story begins with Governor Weatherby Swann and his 12 year old daughter Elizabeth, setting sail to Port Royal, Jamaica. As they journey on, their vessel HMS Dauntless encounters a shipwreck with the sole survivor floating among the wreckage. He turns out to be young Will Turner.
